Adventure Playground by Paul Friedberg & Partners

We all recognize the importance of play for children. New York City alone is home to hundreds of children’s playgrounds–adventure and imagination playgrounds, modern designs, interactive sculptures, nature inspired, wood constructions, loose parts, prefab structures, and more.  The city seems to be devoted to designing, building, and renovating new & interesting places for children to play.

But what about all those teenagers and adults?

For some reason children are the only ones allowed to indulge in play, according to society. Teenagers and Adults who attempt to engage in some form of childhood play are dismissed as unproductive, self-indulgent, and immature; and are told to ‘grow up’ and be more responsible. And, sadly, the City seems to agree by its construction.  Sure, there are hundreds of playgrounds, but how many are adults allowed to use?  Let’s take a look at an example that will reflect the city at large–Central Park.  In Central Park there are 21 designated playgrounds.  Of those 21, however, a grand total of 0 are designed for the use of teenagers or adults.  (There is ‘fitness equipment’ available for use, but we’ll get into that in a second.) Adults could of course try to creatively re-purpose the children’s playgrounds for their own use, but take heed.  Those who venture into children’s playgrounds will most likely be slapped with dirty looks and comments from parents, be questioned of pedophilia, and privy to an outcry of concerns for the safety of the children.  Oh, and did I mention, they probably will get a ticket too?  Most of the playgrounds citywide allow adults only when accompanied by a child under the age of 12. (1).   Thus get caught trespassing sans-children and risk getting a citation. (Re: Women ticketed for eating donuts, Men ticketed for playing chess)  Welcome to your NYC Playground!

Yet, for those of us who do find ways and places to regularly engage in play, there is no doubt that we are rewarded with a better quality of life.  Beyond the obvious increase in physical fitness & health, we also find that our stress levels drop, we learn to engage and interact with others more easily, and we begin to see opportunities in places we would otherwise have overlooked.  Play contributes to our development as individuals.

And of course the City has woken up and taken notice of the importance of getting up and out on your feet (2).  NYC maintains numerous campaigns, programs, and facilities to assist adults (and children, of course), in building & leading an active, healthy lifestyle.  However, they seem to be running up against the same wall with each solution.  A gym is not the same thing as a playground, and does not offer the same set of complex benefits.

II.

In 2012 NYC opened its first official ‘adult playground’ and has plans to build two dozen more by the end of 2014 (3).  However, calling them playgrounds is a gross exaggeration.  That ‘adult playground’ is nothing more than an outdoor gym, with isolated stations and plastic signs telling you what you should be doing and where and how.  Pull-ups here, situps there, balance on this one beam and this one beam alone.  No problem solving required, no creativity needed, no room for exploration or collaboration… no fun, no freedom.  The only two benefits I see is that it is free to use and smells significantly better than a box gym.

Teenagers are faring a little better, but just barely.  There is the development of a playground at Hudson Yards, but its completion is set way out in 2015, and what it ends up offering is yet to be seen.  For those who enjoy skateboarding, there are numerous skateparks open to the public, though it should be noted that their use is contingent upon the signature of a waiver and specific equipment requirements.  But if skating isn’t you’re thing, then you’re as well off as the rest of the adult population.

Thus there is no denying that in the City and Society today, there is a unacceptable and near complete lack of opportunity for teenagers and adults to engage in free, unstructured, creative play. When you go to a park, your options are to walk, on this path or that one, or to sit on a bench, in the shade or the sun, or to buy a vendor hot dog & people watch.  There are tons of bike paths if you’re able to afford a bike, or you could throw a ball in the field, if you’re allowed on the grass, so long as you don’t disturb your neighbors.

And, well, with those as your best options, it should be no surprise to hear that in NYC more than 1/2 the adult population is either overweight or obese(4)(5).  One could easily tie to the cause the fact that the opportunities that are available to get moving are too expensive, difficult, competitive, or, to put it plainly, not a whole lot of fun.  Fitness & play needs to be more than gym workouts, expensive specialty classes, long walks in the park, and competitive team sports.

To put the long story short–we don’t need more gyms and classes in our city; we need more playful, adult infrastructure.  We need infrastructure that is complex, inter-generational, and flexible, that allows adults & teenagers to develop and explore their own open-ended challenges.  We need a place that is safe, welcoming, accessible, and fun. …And We need to stop looking at play as a distraction or diversion from reality, but rather as an integral element of our continual, healthful development.

Note: Please remember that these are my opinions.  I am not directly attacking anyone, but merely putting forth a swath of observations I’ve made over the last three+ years actively engaged in the community.

I. Intro

Over the last ten years our discipline has been in a state of self definition–and continues to exist there. Without having generations of history, instruction, and training anchoring our practice, Parkour is still open to wide and varied, and potentially permanent definition by its practitioners today.

With this comes both great opportunity, and great risk.

On one hand, as practitioners, we have a lot of power.  Our generation gets to be the ones who shape the driving philosophies, the dominant culture, and the public perception of Parkour.  We are given the chance to study and research other movement disciplines, allowing us to freely borrow the elements we deem best while discarding the rest. We get to define the degree of competition, accessibility, and risk in our practice.  We decide methodology, technique, and, most importantly, the culture that will be associated with what we do.

On the other hand, we perhaps have little power.  We are open to negative influence and misrepresentation due to a lack of a unifying identity.  We have no way to bestow credit to the deserving and discredit to the exploiters.  Having no generation of teachers before us, we can be quick to overvalue experience and undervalue education.  We have an ambiguous relationship with the authorities, the public sphere, and the media.  In our globalized, internet-centric age, the reckless mistakes of one can influence and impact the public perception and active cultures halfway around the world.

II. My Parkour

I want to talk then about where I perceive us to be now in that process of self definition.  I wish to applaud that which I perceive to be great progress and to call out that which I wish I could change.  But, before I delve into that critique, I wish to give you a quick look at the discipline of Parkour as I wish it to be percieved.  This hopefully will help recenter you, the reader, and give you an idea of where my critique originates from:

Parkour would be the discipline of personal challenge.  Practitioners would use the natural capacities of their body, and the fortitude of their mind, to overcome obstacles and challenges they set for themselves.  There would be an emphasis on personal artistry, technical competence, and playfulness, opposed to high athleticism, power, and manhood.  AKA Practitioners would place more value on creative personal style and excellent technique over the difficulty, danger, or extremeness of maneuver.

As to the community, we would be encouraging as many people to participate as possible, and would subsequently give them space and respect to pursue their personal path.  Beginners would have equal worth as long term practitioners, regardless of motive.  Maturity, self-respect, respect for your environment (spaces & authorities), and humility would reign.  Anything less would not be tolerated.  Competition, comparison, and ego would have no place.  We would be a culture removed from the pursuit of spectacle. Rather, Parkour would be highly personal, and an excellent tool for intimate communication.

So this is my Parkour.  For some of you, this may resemble the Parkour you want as well.  For others, not so much. But, with this being said, I would like to address the state of our discipline.

III. Public Perception & Our Role in Shaping it

It is of my opinion that the issues of credibility amongst our peers will work themselves out over time.  Parkour now has groups stepping forward seeking legitimization and unification through opening gyms, working with public institutions, and issuing certifications to name a few.  There are conversations held on forums, talks given on national stages, and documentaries being released.  There are strong leaders, with strong communities, that now exist, that very vocally push for a community that is safe, respectful, responsible and mature. There are instructors that are now dedicating their time and efforts to having a deeper understanding of the movements themselves, through traditional education, personal study, and invention.  Techniques and their respective progressions are becoming increasingly focused and defined.  And, even though this has only been happening over the last 3-5 years on a larger scale, and is undoubtedly riddled with differences in approach, there are recurring and overarching themes that have emerged despite differences in practice and geography.  We are moving towards some form of unified identity.

Though this has not quiet permeated all of the smaller communities, and there are definitely those that still exist in the immaturity of adolescence, I believe that our discipline is actively working to exit its teenage-pain years.

However, what we may not be able to recover from, or have very good hold of, is the influence exerted on our publicly perceived identity by the combination of the mainstream media, the internet, and the still existent immaturity.

More often then not, Parkour is represented to the public through news & information outlets as a culture dominated by the adolescent, thrill-seeking, adrenaline junky male stereotype, and all its subsequent affiliations (immaturity, egoism, impatience, lack of control, etc)–a stereotype that many wish to deny dominates but, from my experience, inevitably still has a strong foot and place.  In our practice and its representation, the movements have taken the priority–and more often than not our Parkour culture has come to overvalue physical power, manhood, and those who are taking the largest, riskiest jumps.  The news, the internet, and even many practitioners, tend to focus on the spectacle of our movement rather than the spirit.

This has lead to a number of ailments and the emergence of a fairly abrasive, and potentially perceived exclusive, movement culture–one far from the one I dream of.

I offer three points to support this:

1. Money, Ego, Power, and the Media: With value being increasingly placed on power and risk, so comes the growth of the ego and pursuit of the spectacle.  You can see this happening with the emergence of lucrative athlete sponsorships, high-exposure competitions, and celebrity-status gyms trying to take over the world.  With the rise of corporate interest and the potential to make big money (if you’re lucky), there has been an increasing focus by practitioners on being the best and proving it.  Phrases like ‘Going Big’ ‘We go hard’ and ‘Go big or go home’ have become embedded in the culture.  Gone are the days where videos were simple, sliced together clips of challenges and trainings in our backyard.  Today videos are calculated, directed, and subjected to hours of post-production.   Only the biggest, and flashiest movements are welcome.  Cue dub-step, victory flips, and commentary on being manly. And, if you cant afford to get yourself a camera man, if you aren’t pursuing massive power, your video most likely will be labelled amateur and go unnoticed.  Amateur–A word that has no place in our discipline.  We cant be a community if everyone is trying to scramble to the top, to best their mates, to be ‘the‘ preeminent voice/face/source on Parkour.

2. Competition & Elite Athletes: With the emergence of competition and an idea of what the ‘elite athlete’ should look like, also comes a shift in how one approaches training.  More frequently in class by my newer students I am asked ‘what next.’  This comes from a completely misguided focus when it comes to training.  Students and practitioners come in with a checklist of movements they want to learn, and often move too quickly into advanced maneuvers before they should–before they can land quietly, control their momentum properly, build strength required for navigating mistakes, and so forth.  (I am not saying that this is just a fault of the student though, for there are also some teachers at fault as well–dangerously forging ahead in order to placate their students & retain clients).  While the eagerness to learn is invaluable, the lack of patience and discipline is dangerous.  Practitioners more and more want to be constantly learning something cool and new, bigger and flashier, rather than focusing the hours, days, years on the conditioning and drilling required to do it well.  This is why I believe there has been a rise in injuries.  Competition, and fast-track training, ultimately encourages practitioners to take risks prematurely for a chance at success–money, recognition, esteem, sponsorship, commercial deals, etc.  Personal safety takes a backseat to the desire to impress, and is easily sacrificed if need be.  And thus practitioners ultimately end up pursuing bigger, riskier movements long before they have acquired the strength and technical refinement required to safely and consistently navigate their obstacles (and any mistakes that may come with it)—just so that they may be sooner recognized as ‘good’, and subsequently ‘accepted’ into the Parkour world.

3. Diluted Philosophy & Respect Tied to this impatience, and need to be the best/accepted, is inevitably the dilution of the philosophies embedded in Parkour.  Once things like competition, ego, need for approval, and a sense of self importance begins to trickle in, once we begin defining the idea of ‘an elite practitioner’, the ‘of-value’ practitioner, it is hard to hold on to the Parkour principles of mutual respect, personal safety, moderation, the sharing of knowledge, and humility.  We can not fully respect others when we are competing against them, when we are comparing their capabilities to ours, when we are judging them, even subconsciously, for their shortcomings.  We hesitate to share our innovation, we are unable to find the pure joy in simple play, we think little of our movement fifty, sixty, seventy years from this day.   We forget movement is a tool for personal growth and the exploration of creativity, and treat it instead as a means to an end. I think the Call to Arms from Parkour Generations delves into this more.

As stated prior, when we focus so greatly on the movement itself, when we focus on overcoming others rather than overcoming ourselves, we lose the chance to connect with others in our community–to communicate on another level, to interact and see the world through someone else, to problem solve as a team, to grow as a human being.

The media, competition and the ego, the dilution of respect & spirit, the overvaluation of power and under appreciation of effort… these things all contribute to the rise of an extremely abrasive movement culture.  More than once I have had students approach me, intimidated by what they’ve read and seen online, on television, even in their parks, nervous to even think of trying.

With images of athletic men, climbing buildings, flipping at great heights, and jumping roof gaps dominating the majority of visual content in articles and research papers on Parkour, with the ‘Parkour’ Red Bull competitions and cinematic Ninja Warrior courses standing as our strongest broadcasted televised image, with practitioners still obsessively applauding the biggest, baddest videos…, we end up alienating the casual practitioner, the play-oriented practitioner, the technically inclined, the older, the weaker, the young.  I won’t delve too deeply into gender issues here today, but they exist and are deep rooted.  If you want to get the surface, take a look at youtube comments full of sexist backlash… comments like ‘they should make a kitchen parkour vid’ or ‘It wouldn’t have hurt her if she done all of that naked, or at least topless’.  –With such an intense masculine culture and masculine language dominating the scene, we even turn off prospective female participants.

We are, without realizing it, undermining the built-in advantage of having such an accessible discipline by making it appear to be an exclusive club for high level male athletes.  And, we have finally come to a place today where, if we aren’t careful, this emerging culture of power-thirsty practitioners, irresponsibility, inpatient students, competition, and adolescence will become inextricably tied to our discipline of Parkour, the same way skateboarding is inevitably tied to the stereotype of its ‘unruly, destructive, adolescent punk skaters.’ (A stereotype that many know does not hold water in many places and yet lives on due to the way the culture formed in its early public years).

IV. To A Close….

With this short entry I am not claiming these issues are universal or apparent in all communities.  I am not trying to devalue the importance of taking risk. I am not crying out for uniformity in the practice of our discipline–for that would wipe out the those characteristic differences between people, their practices and geographies, which makes our movement interesting, beautiful, rich. I am not saying that we should completely move away from valuing & developing power, pushing the human limits, and so forth.  I think everyone can eventually derive value from lifting weight and pushing their physical limits, from facing fear.  I even think competition, with yourself that is, is healthy.

Rather, with this short entry, I am calling for a re-evaluation of what we appreciate above all else.  I am calling for the development of a code of conduct.  I am calling for all practitioners to step back and really take a hard and long look at how our discipline is being developed & defined.  Will we be a sport of competition, recognition, and physical capacity?  or, Will it be a community, for the movement, the philosophy, for life?

The great thing about life is that it is not so much where we stand but where we are moving.  As a discipline, this is where we may be now, but there is no reason we cant push our community towards valuing effort over achievement.  There is no reason we can’t take control of how the media represents us.  We can say no to doing stunts and jumping off buildings when asked for photos by the news.  We can work to educate the public, and educate our community, on our core values–to take the time to fully explain who we are and how we practice.  We can take the time to educate ourselves in order to more responsibly teach & respect others. We can call out the communities who still wade deep in sexism, anti-authoritarianism, and reckless training–and call out the individuals leading those communities as well.  We can opt out of competition, release videos more casually, train with those outside our comfort zone, below our movement capacity, from different age groups or movement disciplines.  We can make the the choices that will result in positive growth because we, the practitioners, have it in our power yet to shape our discipline, and the way the world will see us.

“Can we have a heart to heart for a second? Exercise can suck!  I’m sure many of you agree that getting fit and staying there can be a pretty tedious task. Running on the treadmill for hours can be mind-numbing, as can strapping into exercise machines, and lifting weights…over and over, day in and day out, all in the name of meeting some unrealistic standard of beauty…

When approached like that, yes, fitness is absurd.   When we are forced to do such repetitive and simple movements, that sometimes are so physically enjoyable, of course we just  zone out, stop paying attention, and try to just get through it.  We find ourselves counting down the minutes, the seconds, until we can leave the gym and just go home!

We miss out on all the joy movement has to offer. and to me–that’s whats absurd.

The human body was designed to move, and designed to enjoy movement. Our ancestors ran through trees, climbed over rocks, and play games. Movement was a defining part of life. And somehow over the last century we’ve redefined it as a chore–no more important than doing the dishes or taking out the trash or mowing the lawn, if you’re lucky enough to have one!

So I’m here today to change the way you think about exercise–to give you an alternative to the fancy gym memberships, expensive equipment, and ultra competitive team sports. I’m here to give you a tool that can turn the hard work of exercise in to play… and that tool is Parkour.

Parkour is a discipline focused on natural human movements.  Movements such as crawling [action] balancing [action] jumping [action] swinging [action] and vaulting [action] Beyond the movement, Parkour is a discipline of overcoming obstacles, both mental and physical.   You can be both creative and critical. You learn the difference between good risk and bad, and how to cope with the uncertainties in your life. You can begin to understand your capabilities and where your limits lie.

I’m sure at least a few of you are wondering–How can the practice of Parkour teach you these things? Well–lets take a closer look:

1. You can first practice Parkour in its safest form–by staying low to the ground and focusing on control, patience, and building an understanding of your body in space.

2.  With time, you can advance and begin setting yourself isolated challenges that are either more physically demanding, which requires a deeper understanding of your abilities, or more mentally demanding, forcing you to face fear and trust in yourself

3. Alternatively you can utilize dynamic movements and focus either on: (a) building greater efficiency, which forces you to problem solve and quickly resolve a path over under through or (b) fluidity, which gives you space to be creative and innovative with your body.

4. You can even just opt to practice Parkour through games, which lets you to think less on the technique and focus more on just enjoying movement.

The list goes on.  There is no right or wrong in Parkour, for utlimately you set the rules.  We have no standards of success or gold medals to win. You need only to come out and try your hardest.  Because in Parkour we celebrate effort over achievement.  It doesnt matter if you cant balance your first day or jump.  Maybe you wont be able to get up and over your second try or third.  Inevitably you will fall but you will also learn to get back up and to try again.  This is because you are not working to be better than everyone else but better than yourself.

And therein lies the first, and most important thing you need to know about Parkour, and movement in general, and that is–that there is no barrier of entry.  There is no such thing as being too old, or too weak, being too busy or not good enough!

But I dont expect you to completely believe me when I say fitness can be fun, especially after 5 short minutes. As Buckminster Fuller once said that “If you want to teach people a new way of thinking, don’t bother trying to teach them.  Instead, give them a tool the use of which will lead them to new ways of thinking.”

So, after a short demonstration by members of our community, I’d like to invite you all over to play, and, perhaps, pick up that tool that will change the way you think about fitness and yourself.

One of the plagues that ails our movement culture today can be summed up in a few words:

“oh, I know.”
“I already learned how to do that

Every instructor has probably had these phrases, or something similar, thrown at them at least once by one of their students.  Sometimes you might hear yourself saying it as you brushed off critique from a friend.  We are so eager to be constantly learning something new that we become dismissive of revisiting lessons we’ve already heard.

II.

We have entered an age where we are confusing familiarity with a technique or movement with true knowledge and mastery.  And, every time we become dismissive of critique, every time we say ‘I know’, we are defeating ourselves and limiting our potential.  With every ‘I know’, we declare ourselves superior to practice, we prevent the opportunity for growth, and we project ourselves as not only difficult to talk to, but difficult to train with as well.

I mean, I’ll admit it.  Learning new skills and techniques is very exciting.  It expands your language, reveals new challenges, and, without doubt, can assist in helping overcome tougher training and motivation plateaus. However, if you think you are only progressing if you are learning something new, then you will never be master of your movement, nor, most likely, are you training in a way that leads to longevity.

Movement is not a thing to be mastered in one day, one week, one year of practice.  To truly understand a movement, and to master a techniques, one is required to consistently revisit old lessons and to find new challenges within an already established vocabulary.

III.

The other day I was teaching a few students how to jump.  Right away, the students declared that they wanted to do something different because they ‘learned how to jump last week.’   So I walked over to the rail and I asked, can you jump to this?  No reply.  Can you jump over this wall, and land quietly? Can you jump down on to that ledge… and then up on to that box?  Can you jump and land while ducking?  Can you jump with one leg?  Accurately?  Five times in a row?

Needless to say, there were no further complaints.

IV.

Often, people will say they know how to do something long before they do.  The mind often understands long before the body.  It is important to constantly remind yourself, as you train and teach others, that it is not the mind that needs to learn, but the body–and the body only learns through frequent repetition and exploration.body_brain

I. Out of Time

More and more often people complain about the lack of time they have in a week to exercise and stay healthy.

How many times have you heard this one:
“I just don’t have any time!”

It is easy to be sympathetic to this sentiment but the reality is that there are 168 hours in a week.  If you work a 40-hour week (9-5) and sleep a full eight hours each night, you are still left with 72 hours.  72 hours.  Lets even subtract another 7 hours so that you can pass up ‘fast’-foods in order to cook yourself healthy dinners.  And subtract another 10 for commuting (A nod to you new york, with almost an hour long commute!)(1).  You’re still left with over 50+hours and Public health guidelines only recommend about 4 hours a week of exercise in order to stay healthy.

Do the math.

You don’t have time, you say?  You’re right, what you don’t have time for is excuses.

II. Epidemic of American Life
Americans, especially New Yorkers, are always on the go, 24/7. We are racing around every day to make more money, to improve our status, to catch up on our work, trying desperately to get ahead.  For this, we have the highest GDP in the world, are leaders in innovation and design, and have a very high standard of living.

However, we are also suffering from an epidemic of obesity.  We overindulge in fast foods and liquor.  We sleep too much or we sleep too little.  We are indoors more than 90% of the day (2), behind computers and televisions. We never have time enough to exercise because we are too overwhelmed by social media, financial burden, demands of our jobs, etc.

Thus this average life results in aging that results in weaker bones, softer muscles, and a body that fails you… all because we just didn’t have time.

III. The Real Problem
We need to stop viewing exercise as work.  If you hate running, then don’t go spending hours on the treadmill.  If you hate team sports, then don’t go join the local baseball league.  Movement comes in many forms–it is just a matter of identifying the one that speaks to you.

Besides, if you don’t enjoy what you are doing, you will make sure there is never any time.

We need to learn to take delight in movement, to seek out fulfilling forms of play, and to indulge ourselves.  It is not about getting healthy and fit, but being healthy and fit–enjoying movement for life, as an integral part of that life.  We need to find forms of play that are given the same weight of importance as our work.

For play is work of the most serious and important kind.  Play is where we explore who we are, where we encounter our insecurities and face our limitations, where we learn to cope with insecurity and begin to define and exceed our capacities. Play allows us to be healthy and fit without having to feel like we are working on being healthy and fit.

Playing, and living healthy, demonstrates respect for ourselves.

So stop making excuses. You do have enough time!  Go find your form of play and start respecting your body and your self.

Two Traceurs Having A Conversation

I. Language of Movement

Language is one of the most important components of civilization.  It allows us to express our thoughts, to explore our ideas, and to overcome our problems.  And, even though there are thousands of languages, it is hard to find one that is truly universal, one without a huge learning curve, one that speaks across any juncture of age, place, and intelligence.

But it exists.

Movement is that universal language and is, above all, the most accessible form of communication.  Each and every person can both observe and participate in the dialogue with little to no training.   We can express emotion, reflect thought, and expose the complex characteristics that make us each uniquely ourselves.

And though there are many dialects of this Movement language, such as dance, gymnastics, and martial arts, the dialect that stands out, above them all, is Parkour.

II. Dialect of Parkour

Parkour is a unique physical discipline in that practitioners, known as Traceurs, have complete control over their practice.  They choose their environments, they set their own challenges, they make their own rules.  The purpose of practice is left to the individual to define.  Thus you can step back and really examine–Are their rules non-negotiable or loose guidelines?  Do they train in the heart of the public or in the quiet alley behind their home?  Are their challenges primarily of the physical nature or the mental?  Complex or simple?  Inspired or out-of-the-pack?

And with these choices, Traceurs weave their amazing stories–stories of who they are, what they believe, and what they want.  With every movement, they clearly reflect their values, personality, and temperament.

II. A single jump.

In a single jump, for example, you can read about the characteristics and personality of the Traceur.  There will be practitioners who jump with cold, calculating certainty.  Their jumps speak a story of maturity, of discipline and self-knowing.  Some jump with violence, revealing a story from their depths–a buried rage to give them a final push.  Others jump with fear, unsure of the end result, unsure of their own selves.

Clumsy jumps, creative jumps, passive jumps, the list can go on, each one uniquely reflecting the jumper, each uniquely telling a story.  Some jumps reveal hesitation and self-consciousness whereas some reveal overwhelming pride and ego, some speak to the degree of creativity and others to a meticulous planning nature.

Don’t understand?  Well then, I ask–go find a jump, whether it is two curbs or two cliffs, and observe how you feel.  Did you pick a jump that scares you or did you play it safe? Is your heart pounding in your chest?  Is the jump a strange one–requiring you to duck when you land so as not to bump your head or relatively simple?  Are you safely out of sight, so no one will see you if you fail or are you in public, hoping everyone will stop to watch?  The more jumps you take, the clearer the pattern emerges.

III. A Half Hour of Play

So, you can only imagine then, if a single jump can say all that, what can it say in an half hour of play? Well, look around, look at the people you choose to train with:

What challenges do they choose for themselves?  How do they prepare to confront them? Do they seek critique and collaboration or are they isolated in their practice? Are they first to volunteer an activity or do they follow along?  Are they passive observers or active participants?  How do they deal with failure?  Success?

A few years back I attended a Parkour gathering in San Antonio Texas.  We had 75+ practitioners, Some as young as 10 and those well in to their 50s, some with years of play under their belt and some new to the experience.  And this group, flush with variety, took a trip to a wonderful wooden playground in the suburbs to train.

The group dispersed, each individual finding challenges unique to their interests or skillsets.  When walking around, the personalities of each Traceur slowly came out.  One group immediately sought out the largest jumps in the park–ambitious, courageous, reckless, all these personalities followed.  Another group went to the fence line, carefully hopped up on to the rail, and attempted to balance without fail, reflecting different degrees of discipline and patience.  And yet another group stood around watching the others move, nervous to join in, unsure of their skills, curiously observing.

And the variations go on.  I watched people tremble before jumps, psych themselves up, cool themselves off.  Some only worked on challenges found by others, whereas there were those who were only interested in the challenges they could set for themselves.  A few played games while others designed obstacle courses.  Some were arrogantly playing to the passerby public, and others were cautiously staying out of sight.

The permutations of personality present there that day were infinite.

IV. Who Are You?

In a half hour of play one can speak volumes, reflecting varying degrees of virtue.  Through a half hour, you can reflect on personal creativity, respect, efficiency, temperance, ambition, curiosity, courage, patience, perseverance, honesty, and so on.  And it is this kind of conversation I value the most, for movement is the language of honesty.  Your actions do not lie.

So, next time you step out and seek a challenge, next time you set a jump, ask yourself who you are. 

From Obstacles to Opportunities
Parkour and the City

We all have our own map of the city in our head.  For most it remembers where our favorite places are to eat are, where our friends live, where to get coffee, where to hang out, and so on.

Our map, however, remembers where the best places are in the city for an adult to play; Little dots light up across the mental landscape pinpointing locations of sturdy scaffolding and rough concrete barriers, with play-friendly public spaces, and large oak trees with branches that hang low enough for jumping on.   It records every physical challenge we’ve completed and all the ones yet to be.  It knows the difference between public spaces that tolerate and ignore play and those that embrace and encourage movement.

This map is a unique map of textures and temperatures and human activity, of tested and untested public and private relationships, of enjoyment, tolerance, and rejection–and it is a map that could only come to be through Parkour.

What is Parkour you ask?

Parkour is a discipline of movement and self-improvement that teaches one how to overcome any obstacle both efficiently and creatively, using nothing more than the human body.  This playful platform of movement encourages interaction between yourself, others, and your environment.

Traceurs, or individuals who practice Parkour, thus know the city like no other. We study textures, we grip, we feel how sturdy our obstacles are. As we walk through the city we are compelled to interact with it; running, jumping, climbing, crawling, swinging, and balancing. The mere act of walking around becomes an adventure, leading us to look for new challenges, new ways to improve ourselves.  Can I jump from this curb to that one in a single bound?  Can I slip through this scaffolding without touching the bars?  Can I balance along this rail without falling once?

And it is this type of interaction with the city that there needs to be more of–this engaged awareness, this parkour mentality.  It brings new life to both popular public spaces and those leftover and overlooked.  Things that once slowed movement–benches, tables rails, walls–now become elements that enable .  Obstacles become opportunity for growth, imagination, and play.  And suddenly there is no mission impossible, there is no challenge too great.

This playful view of the world, this parkour mindset and approach to life, is something we all once had.  At one point, when we were at our youngest, we didn’t understand the word ‘impossible.’  We believed in ourselves, we took risks, we wrestled for hours with how to get across the playground without touching the ground (it was lava, remember?).  We tested ideas and learned of our limitations.  We became the ultimate problem solvers.

As we grew older, however, we lost that unwavering resolution, that uncapped potential.  We scraped our knees, we broke a bone, our parents panicked at the sight of blood.  We were told that some problems were too hard or impossible and that either we weren’t strong enough or smart enough or old enough.  …That we never would be.

But this isn’t the truth.  This is just the world trying to tell you to grow up, to color inside of the lines, to fit the mold, to play it safe.

So I want to demand an answer: Why is this considered the right thing to do!  Why have we allowed safety to be emphasized to the point of instilling fear, insecurity, and inability in both children and adults?  Not only does this obsession with safety decrease the number of real opportunities to create and engage with your environment, it also severely limits self-exploration of personal (physical+mental) abilities and limitations.

 And if we continue to place emphasis on being overly safe we’ll end up only creating the unsafe–a world where people don’t know how to confront complicated challenges or to cope with uncertainty.

As famous playground designer Paul Friedberg explains, “[Our problem is that] We want the child to be living in a padded box. [But] A child has to have the real world, fraught with challenges to overcome.”

So, there needs to be a return to play.  True, fulfilling, authentic play, where children and adults alike can seek out real challenges, navigate real risks, and begin to honestly understand their physical and mental capabilities. …Play through which they can really grow.

And Parkour is one of those few disciplines that can provide this holistic platform of play while acknowledging this already pervading atmosphere of fear.

Through the medium of games and challenges, Parkour encourages curiosity and experimentation, builds strength and self-confidence,  and of course teaches the value of risk and the importance of facing your fears.

Furthermore, Parkour teaches creative problem solving.  A simple game of hopscotch can be transformed in an exercise in problem-solving when squares start to appear on the sides of walls, under railings, on low ledges.  In practice we learn that techniques that work in one situation may not work in another.  We are forced to explore alternative solutions, other ways over/under/through the obstacles we face, to find a way that we may not even have seen or tried.  And through this process, Parkour teaches us how to adapt to every situation, to think outside the box.

As to those safety concerns, through its practice Parkour ingrains safety.  You learn how to run properly, to jump and land without impact, to move without hurting yourself.  It teaches you not only how to assess the risks associated with any challenge you face, but how to judge it to be within or outside of your abilities.

So, forget buying expensive equipment or building one of those sterile play-structures in your backyard.  Teach your children Parkour, learn it for yourself.  With only a pair of shoes and their imagination, one can learn how to seek out challenges and games alone.

Especially, we would like to emphasize how crucial it is to teach children Parkour as they enter their teenage years.  You see, as children get older they outgrow the playgrounds they know so well.  Most  of those constructed around the country are designed for children under 12 and restrict children older. Even if there aren’t any signs forbidding play, the dirty looks of adults say enough.  ‘You don’t belong here, you’re too old to be playing here.’ Teenagers and adults alike are cast away from the only spaces their communities provide for play.

And, at a time so crucial for defining who they are, society shepherds teenagers and adults away from the playgrounds and into other public spaces, where play is no longer the apparent intention.  Rather, these public spaces and parks offer benches to watch some tourists and enjoy a vendor hot dog, a patch of lawn for a nap or cloud gazing,  windy paths that lead to no where and offer nothing but a view.  (And we wonder why obesity is an issue, hm).

Now, we’re not saying that we’re against benches and ice cream and napping on a nice sunny day, but these provisions alone clearly offer very little in return in terms of human growth.

Adults and teenagers should have as much of a place to play as children. They need to play too!  The same gains we make as children through play will only increase in complexity and magnitude as we age and mature.  Our abilities to assess risk, to problem solve, to cope with uncertainty, can continue to increase and refine themselves ad infinitum.  There is so much growth that can still be gained as we slip in to adulthood.

So Parkour provides that playground, for teens and adults alike.  It provides a world that will never run out of challenges, that has no age limitations and no skill requirements.  And if we teach children while they are young enough, they will never find themselves lost in a world without a playspace of their own.

V.

Obstacles are apart of every day life, whether it is climbing a wall, getting to work on time, or delivering making a presentation in front of a large group.  The lessons we can learn through play and though parkour--to creatively approach problems, to face our fears, to love and respect the people around us and the world we are in--are lessons that can be carried out through the rest of our lives, and are lessons without completion.

So we urge you to, right now, this very day, to start pinning your map with every opportunity for play, for every chance to grow. To always look for opportunities to become better than you are, regardless of whether you are a child or adult.
